Limited vinyl LP pressing of the digitally remastered mono mix of this legendary jazz release. Coltrane Plays the Blues is an album credited to jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1962 on Atlantic Records. It was recorded at Atlantic Studios during the sessions for My Favorite Things, assembled after Coltrane had stopped recording for the label and was under contract to Impulse Records. Like Prestige Records before them, as Coltrane's fame grew during the 1960s, Atlantic used unissued recordings and released them without either Coltrane's input or approval. John Coltrane was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions during his career, and appeared as a sideman on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk.
Following the June 9th compilation TRANE: THE ATLANTIC COLLECTION, Rhino is releasing mono reissues for five Coltrane studio albums: Giant Steps, Olé Coltrane, Coltrane Plays The Blues, Bags & Trane and The Avant-Garde. These albums were recently issued together as part of Rhino's boxed set John Coltrane: The Atlantic Years In Mono. The set received critical acclaim in 2016 including five stars from Downbeat which noted, "With no alternate takes and presented verbatim and presented as the albums were originally issued song-by-song, there is certainly a warmth, clarity and a sense of wholeness that can give new fans a fresh way to listen to Coltrane."
